More information about the campaign: http://www.defectivebydesign.org/keep-pressure-on-sony 2011-04-19: I've improved the wording in this version; the version I sent was slighly different and in particular it incorrectly said "persecute" instead of "procecute"; sorry, I had written too fast. I've also clarified the scope of my objections in the first paragraph, despite it being very clear anyway for the intended receiver. From: Luca Saiu To: Nicole Seligman Cc: info@defectivebydesign.org Subject: I boycott Sony Cc: info@defectivebydesign.org Madam, I find the recent actions of your company, in relation to the removal of the "OtherOS" feature from the PS3 firmware and the subsequent legal action, extremely disturbing. Not only Sony seems actively engaged in *removing* useful features, working directly against the interest of its customers, but it also abuses the court system by making it an instrument to harass and intimidate people engaged in constructive work, who simply try removing such arbitrary limitations, to everyone's benefit. Such contempt for its own customers is well visible, and of course has an impact on the public perception of the company. It's incredible that Sony continues to actively work against people for the alleged "crime" of trying to run software not explicitly authorized by the company, on hardware they own -- working on removing Sony's anti-features and publishing the relevant information is something worthy of praise. Your company is attempting to penally prosecute decent people because of their being cooperative to others. As a fellow decent human being I also feel deeply insulted. I, for one, am publicly boycotting Sony and I will strive to make my message as widely visible as possible. I do not care about games anyway, but I will still avoid *all* Sony products, urging everybody else to do the same, until this attack of yours on everybody's freedom lasts. -- Luca Saiu [Everybody is free to adapt and reuse my e-mail, with or without attribution, but the thing will work better if you write your own text]
